I do not know  about ALL digital cameras, but those I have had
experience with do NOT require one to use the camera's software.
They all can download the memory card to the computer via a multi-card
reader as far as I know. Essentially the memory card is just a mini
storage unit - like a floppy, USB "thumb drive" - etc.
