Writer speed and "burn proof" capabilities are involved. 100Mb Ethernet probably can only support 5-7MB/sec. transfer (depending on the protocol in use - network drive protocols tend to be "chatty" although NFS v3 can help compared to MS' CIFS and earlier versions of NFS) while a drive writing at 48x is writing at 7.2MB/sec. I know that my use of UBCD writing indicated that the software was indeed using "burn-proof" settings but didn't have a way to verify it since the process was all local. Just 'cause it sez it's using something doesn't mean it works on your hardware (wrong command set, etc.). Of course, read speed is also involved - hard drives are not all that fast compared to memory and fragmentation, retries, etc. can slow things down a lot. --- *Durango b211 * DurangoMail for Windows NT/9x * Origin: Try Our Web Based QWK: DOCSPLACE.ORG (1:123/140) .
