Tom, I don't want to alarm you but that particular problem can occur
with certain virus infections.   Have you done a complete scan of your
XP to be sure it's clean?

There's a bunch of stuff about it in the Google Groups data base.  You
might want to take a look and see if any of it applies to you.  I
don't know if you got on the net after installing XP but if you did
and was not using a firewall or at least a router with NAT, it
wouldn't take long to get infected.   I know you're on dial up but
that doesn't matter - just as dangerous.
