You might want to give the free AbiWord (www.abisource.com) a try-- a 
relatively small download (about 5 MB), and much less feature bloat than either 
Word Perfect or OpenOffice.org.

It's fast, attractive, has more features than WordPad, and opens both MS Word 
and Word Perfect formats (though I don't think it can save in Word Perfect 
format).

If it could be set to save in *.DOC or *.RTF by default, it would be almost 
perfect.
