Subj : Linspire 5.0 To : TOM WALKER From : CHARLES ANGELICH Date : Mon Sep 26 2005 07:07 pm 123c7854dc33 win95 Hello Tom - CA>> In the USA over half of all internet access is _not_ via a CA>> modem. In other countries modem access to the internet is CA>> even _less_. The prevailing 'wisdom' is that we should all CA>> be using broadband of one sort or another by the end of CA>> the next decade at the latest. TW> Not accordi8ng to the Information I have. it says that 75% TW> of the people have internet access and 42% have Broadband. This is one of those "NO, you're wrong!" knee jerk responses. Let's analyze this: I said: "In the USA over half of all internet access is _not_ via a modem." You say: "... 42% have Broadband." We differ by 9% - I must be terribly/horribly misinformed. I _do_ see that the way I typed the sentence below was misleading: "The prevailing 'wisdom' is that we should all be using broadband of one sort or another by the end of the next decade at the latest." The "we" I was thinking of when I typed the above refers to those of use who are NOW ACCESSING THE INTERNET, not all of mankind, or the entire population of the USA (obviously New Orleans will be offline for awhile). CA>> And yes, I know that the charges for that access need to CA>> stabilize to a reasonable cost before widespread broadband CA>> will become the 'norm'. TW> Since we have a Free Enterprise system I don't see that TW> happening. The Suppliers are not Stupid and they know it is TW> a "Cash Cow" becaue itv is ADICTIVE. One you are Hooked TW> they have you. Thus al lthose "Come ON" ads fro Low priced TW> Broiadbansd with the Fine print saying after a specified TW> period the PRICE goes BACK UP. In my college economics class they told me we have a "Limited Free Enterprise system". The government reserves the right to interfere in market decisions at any time the government feels the need to do so. There has been talk that slowing adoption of the internet at broadband (or higher) speeds could have a negative impact on our ability to compete in the world markets and the government might just exercise it's authority to intervene and speed the process along. Maybe when they rebuild New Orleans they will bury fiber-optic cable first and make it the 'most networked' city in the USA? CA>> To say that other distributions "handle a much larger CA>> selection of modems" is a bit of a generalization isn't CA>> it? As I recall it KNOPPIX connects but at only 9600 baud CA>> and the other (Xandros?) wouldn't dialout for you? TW> Linspire WILL not Dial out becasue it apparently Rejects my TW> Modem. Xandros Works Great. Btu it is the Cripple Ware TW> edition and I want to check sme more editions before I put TW> any money on the Line. I was suckered into pating for a TW> Mandrake distribution that turned out ot be a total Failure TW> o nmy Hardware. Adn while It was a lot cheaper even my try TW> at the Origional Corel Version was a disaster. Taht one TW> Locked up o nthe Boot of the Self Booting CD. The east 4 TW> Step install didn't even get to Step ONE. CA>> What this tells me is that you need to intervene with a CA>> few _manual_ configuration settings if you want any of CA>> them to function properly for you. TW> WHY i nthe HELL should things need "Mamnual Configuration. TW> The WHOLE thrust of the Linspire movement is EASY INSTAL TW> for those that either pay for the Downlaosd or BUT the TW> Software in a BOX. JUST WHAT part of EASY don't they TW> Undferstand??? I'm losing my perspective here. I'm just thankful I've never ever sold you anything. :-) CA>>>> Even if we don't personally chose to use Linspire there CA>>>> is no reason to not credit them for what they have done CA>>>> that was right as we fault them for their mistakes. TW>>> Hey I have praised it and Pushed it and even shared the TW>>> FREE live linspire copy I have. CA>> I thought you told me you payed for your Linspire CD? TW> I paid for a CD, $1,99, and Shipping instead of TW> Downloadoing the FREE Edition form Linspire. TW>>> BUT that dosen't mean I cannot share the Problems as I TW>>> see it. And ... as I typed (but you removed) - Your _sharing_ the problems implies a request for assistance with those problems. > > , , > o/ Charles.Angelich \o , > <| |> __o/ > / > USA, MI < \ __\__ --- * ATP/16bit 2.31 * .... http://www.devedia.com/dosghost/faf/thefrench.htm * Origin: Try Our Web Based QWK: DOCSPLACE.ORG (1:123/140) .
