Subj : Copying my family history To : CHARLES SCAGLIONE From : JAY EMRIE Date : Sat Sep 24 2005 05:07 pm Afternoon Charles CS> JE> For some time now I have been contemplating somehow copying the book I CS> JE> have of my family history. My ancestor came to Newbury, Mass. in 1635. CS> JE> This book was published in 1890. It is just shy of 2" thick and 6"w x CS> JE> 9"h, some 610 pages plus about 15 preface pages. I would like to make CS> JE> CDs of this book for the rest of my family. As far as I know this is the CS> JE> only copy still extant. As such it can't really be shared with the CS> JE> younger members of my family. Other than a first cousin (about 5 years CS> JE> my elder) I am the oldest surviving member of the Emrie family. CS> JE> I have not been able to open it up and scan the pages - it just will not CS> JE> open up enough to lay the pages flat enough to scan with my flat bed CS> JE> scanner. The book was rebound sometime in the early 1900s - maybe about CS> JE> 1930. The pages are easily torn. Tis a good thing the paper was of CS> JE> excellent quality when printed. I would like to make CDs of the book, CS> JE> thus being able to share it with my entire family. CS> JE> Does anybody have any idea how I might accomplish this? CS>Jean's suggestion of using a hand held scanner is probably the best way CS>but it's certainly not going to result in a good quality copy. Other CS>than getting it done professionally, I don't know how else you could do it CS>without causing wear to the binding or pages. Jean has offered me the use of his hand held scanner. See my answer to him. If I could fine a driver to my OLD Logitech scanman model 256 hand held scanner I'd be in business. As it is it requires Windows 3.1 CS>Before you handle those pages and dig around the book, go to the local CS>pharmacy and pick up some medical gloves. You can buy a box of those CS>throw away gloves, they're not expensive. That will keep the oil from CS>your fingers and hands off the pages. A little late here. I've been reading this book for many years! I suppose (hope) that because I have extremely dry skin, I haven't damaged it too much. The pages are considerably yellowed. I started reading it during visits to my grandparents when I was a small child-6-7 years old. I was lucky enough to somehow inherit the book - I do not remember how - my grand parents left no will. My grandfather suffered a stroke and was paralyzed on his total left side and could only say words like "mama", "papa" (that only needed lips - not tongue) which he had always called my grandmother. Communicated mostly by writing. She took total care of him for many years (about 10) till he passed away when I was about 17.
