I've simply taken pictures of such things which can be digitized (if not taken
with a digital camera in the first place).  You can then load them into a
graphics editor to clean them up.  You could then attempt OCR (you may need to
print them first so you can use the scanner) if you desire.

Use of a digital camera is the same principal as scanning...
