Subj : Coffin Nails for Win-9x ? To : Alan Zisman From : George Vandervort Date : Sat Sep 24 2005 07:36 am Hello Alan! From today's Issue of Kim Komando's New Letter === Cut === Issue Date: Sept. 24, 2005 -- Vol. 9, No. 39 Kim Komando Show Home Page: http://www.komando.com --> FEWER AND FEWER PROGRAMS FOR WINDOWS 98/ME Darlene wrote from Springfield, OR, to ask about shareware. She noted that many programs say they are for Windows 2000 and XP. Since she uses Windows ME, she wanted to know if that meant she couldn't use them. Well, Darlene, that's exactly what it means. Windows 2000 and XP differ fundamentally from 98 and ME. The latter two were based on MSDOS, the early operating system that was abandoned in the mid-90s. Windows 2000 and XP are descended from Windows NT (New Technology), which appeared about the time MSDOS was retired. Their underpinnings are very different. Eventually, programmers will stop writing for 98 and ME altogether. Why? Our site keeps a record of which operating systems our hundreds of thousands of visitors use. Nearly four out of five have XP. Only 10 percent have 98. And ME? It doesn't even register. So I think you have a dying operating system. === Cut === Regards, George Vandervort InterNet EMail: georgev@austin.rr.com Tech Support: http://home.austin.rr.com/llr/tech.html 'Using yesterday's software to create tomorrow's problems today' .... the Beatles said it best, Obla-Dee, Obla-Daa, Life Goes On... --- FMail/Win32 1.60 * Origin: Bill Gates does my Windows (FidoNet 1:382/8) .
