I like to start writing with a thankyou note, this one for you and Jeff G. who got me some addies for an old scanner that was not seen in XP. I got it going, if not with some strange behaviours. If I use it as an image reader, it will pre-scan but dies on scan. This with Paintshop Pro. If I use it with an OCR, all is fine pre-scan and scan. The funny part, there is always one here, is that the same window comes on screen to do either app, the very same window. So, if I want to scan an image, I use the OCR but save the image to PS-P. When there is a will, there is a way. This is a Plustek 4813 P scanner. I can OCR with this one, in French too. I also followed your advise to bloom the scanned image to a larger character font. This sure makes it easier for the OCR function to recognize the imaged letters and flip them to ASCII code. One page yesterday had 2 errors only, when saved to Word 2000. I will say it again, the expertise on this echo is boundless.
