Another alternative place to pick up fido via nntp (newsgroup style) is
news://vtdl.net.  That place allows you to start reading the echos right
away. But posting requires setting up a username anad password.

Other alternative places that I use are:

    news://hub2000.darktech.org
    news://news.fidotel.com
