Subj : Redo ? To : JEFF GUERDAT From : JEAN PARROT Date : Mon Sep 12 2005 04:00 pm Hello Jeff, we were saying ! Saranac is a darn nice area. When I still had a float plane, I toyed with the idea of going there just to see, my son was already married. ;-) JG> That's quite a mouthful! Took me a while to munch it out too. JG> If I understand you properly, you are trying JG> to read a .doc file which tries to open in Notepad. So, you then tried JG> to boot from CD to do a repair of the OS to no avail (errors about JG> missing files) and even Office won't repair/remove. Yep. It must have damage some files somewhere. The system is still ( was ) working in a fashion. Nothing that I could do to make it better so... As it kept getting me back up on the same screen all the time, even if I closed that screen, I had a feeling that it called for major redo. JG> If all this still fails, a fresh install will minimize the time/effort JG> needed to recover. Great minds again ! JG> I'm missing something - how are you booting from D:? Isn't that your JG> CD? My system has a C:\ small HD of 1.5 g and a D:\ of 40 g. The OS is on D:\. The C:\ is where I back up the needed save files. JG> Sounds like the CD is not bootable due to a hardware failure or a JG> media issue, especially if it's a boot CD you created. The CD is an Autostream XP c/w SP2 and after a format, it booted fine and redid the system. But, read on. I could not load Office 2000. I kept asking for files in Windows\System32. I started copying these files one at the time when it stopped to ask for them. The trouble was that I had to get out of Office 2000 to move the files. I then, over the LAN, moved the complete System32 so I could do all from the same screen instead of moving the files on a USB Flash Card. That was taking so long that I installed Office 97. The file moving was done from the G-1. Bingo ! These files in the System32 folder, when I looked at the Proprieties had 0 (zero) KBs in them. I had also tried to instal XP with the original CD then installed SP2, but still Office 2000 would not run through. These files, all in System32, are loaded by the XP CD. I have no control over them and both the Autostream and the original CD c/w SP2, gave me this result. They are part of the OS, no ? Same CDs that I used on this Thinkpad and my VIA 800 system and also on the old Thinkpad ( since removed ) and they all accepted Office 2000 as did this Athlon first, before I formatted it just this morning. I just do not know where I mis-stepped but I will agree with Jay still, computors are fun. Phew ! as you said.
