It is currently using a parallel cable plugged into LPT1 on the XPP box (I
could only wish that it had an ethernet port) and it has a USB port
connection as well (but the two connectors can not be used at the same
time).

Robert Fowler stimulated my thinking process rather well...  ;-))

I'm going to investigate the possibility of using a USB HUB connected to
the printer with cables going to the USB port on each computer...
