It's not an XP thang - it's the laptop.  The Dells I have used all supported
simultaneous display using FN-F8 (labelled CRT/LCD) which toggles the display
through 3 settings:

1 - LCD only
2 - CRT (external monitor) only
3 - both

Look at the laptop configuration/manual - hopefully, you'll find the
combination needed to show both displays at the same time.
