The ability to have the display show on the laptop and projector screen at the same time is a function of the laptop. As Alan pointed out to me in his reply, that usually requires pressing Fn + another key on the laptop. Dig out the laptop manual and see what it says. We have a very old projector that we use for our children's ministry and it projects to the screen and on a Dell laptop at the same time. Even older projectors will work OK depending on the laptop capability. The chopped off image indicates a problem with resolution. What is the maximum resolution of the projector? If for example, you have the projector set to use 640 x 480, try changing it to 800 x 600 if possible. Perhaps Alan will have some better ideas for you to try.
