I don't think you ever mentioned whether you installed XP to a FAT32 partition or reformatted to NTFS before installing XP? A long-shot but if "D" is FAT16 (W95) XP would not recognize that configuration. Has to be either FAT32 or NTFS. You might want to run "SCANDISK /auto" on the "D" drive before doing the defrag? I'm assuming "D" is FAT32. If the partition is NTFS the executable is "CHKDSK /f" and you must reboot from XP to get it to execute prior to booting XP.
