Subj : Missing My Computer icon To : JAY EMRIE From : JEFF GUERDAT Date : Tue Sep 06 2005 07:40 am On 09-05-05, JAY EMRIE said to ALL: JE>I have a laptop with W95 coming in that has the My Computer icon missing JE>from the desktop. It is not in the Recycle Bin either. The owner has no JE>idea where, why or how it disappeared to. 95 (nor does 98 - tried it JE>here last night) doesn't have the same feature XP does as follows: JE>Rt click on blank spot on the desktop JE>Left click on properties JE>left click on Customize Desktop JE>Put a check mark by My Computer. JE>which would presumably restore the My computer Icon. JE>Any idea how to restore the My Computer icon. JE>By the way, the laptop does not have a CD reader!! Only two floppy JE>drives. It is a Gateway. Came to him that way and he didn't get it JE>corrected. :-(. So it isn't a simple thing to restore 95. JE>He also has a desk top eMachine that did not come with restore CD. JE>It will not boot up. I do not know if either has restore partition or JE>not. I will have them in a week or so to check out. JE>Any ideas? See if the following link helps with the missing My Computer icon (it relates to Active Desktop): http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000155.htm Also, put the hard drive in a different computer and copy files onto it. Alan recently pointed someone who was local to me that had the same issue - no CDROM drive and needed a load of the OS. I pulled the hard drive and put it in my laptop, booted DOS from floppy, prepared the drive and copied files. A pain that takes a while (make SURE you have Smartdrive enabled for caching hard drive writes!) but easily gets by missing hardware... --- *Durango b211 * DurangoMail for Windows NT/9x * Origin: Try Our Web Based QWK: DOCSPLACE.ORG (1:123/140) .
