1) My experience was pre-merger, so I wouldn't generalize to post-merger.

2) Your quoting misses the punch line of my original response-- after checking 
with Compaq tech support who said it was OK to back up and then remove the 
restore stuff (I burned it to CD), when I actually needed it, the restore 
process refused to work.

Hence my suggestions to 'be very careful'.
