Subj : Win98SE install? Well, as I probably won't use 98 for more than the occasional game and accessing my ADSL modem (until such times that I can get the hang on how to access it from OS/2), 98 will suffice all right for my modest needs. And where it not for gaming, I wouldn't even considering buying Win98, but stick instead to my NT4 Server. CJ>> Btw, how is Win2000 doing when it comes to gaming? Can I CJ>> run games under Win2000 that runs just fine under 98/98SE? CS> W2K supports games better than NT 4.0, however, games that try to CS> control hardware (Doom, Quake, etc.) will not run. W2K is not a gaming CS> supportive OS, although it come with DirectX video and sound. There is a game called "The Wheel Of Time", based on the eponymous fantasy novel series by Robert Jordan. When I heard about this game in the Swedish fido echo R20_FANTASY as well as in the Usenet newsgroup rec.alt.sf.written.robert-jordan - rasfwrj for short - I decided that I simply MUST get the game demo which is downloadable from the game manufacturer's website www.wheeloftime.com. So I surfed to this adress and find the demo allright. In System Requirements it was stated that the game required Win95 or Win98/98SE, but I thought: "If it runs under 95/98, why not under NT4?", so I downloaded the first part (450kb) which was the installer for the rest of the 75+ Mb demo install. Download went OK and then I fired up the installer. No joy - it refused to run, throwing up an error message that my system configuration was not supported by the Wheel Of Time game. Now some months ago, someone in another fido echo claimed that there exists a patch to the game and game demo that allows the demo and the full game to be run under NT4. But on www.wheeloftime.com don't contain this patch. Does anybody in this echo know of a patch that will allow the Wheel Of Time game to be run fom NT4? CJ>> The thing is, there exist a good upgrade from NT4 Server to CJ>> Win2000 Prof, a Version Upgrade (VUP) for under $300 incl. CJ>> VAT. CS> Ah, the infamous VAT! We take our prices for granted here in the US and CS> tend to forget about the increased cost of purchases in Europe and CS> elsewhere. After the mail in rebate for the W2K upgrade (must have CS> proof of NT 3.1 or NT 4.0) the final cost is around $120.00 for the CS> professional version. How do you prove that you have NT3.1/4.0? Must you send in some sort of coupon or some such or does it suffice that you have the NT4 CD on hand? The thing is that I bought NT4 from a guy who had legally purchased his copy - when the package arrived here, it contained the CD, install diskettes and the install manual on whose front Microsoft's Certificate Of Authenticity (including serial #) was printed. But you *can* evade the infamous VAT if you have a firm and buys from Germany or the Netherlands. When I last week ordered PC DOS 2000 from Mensys, they don't have to charge VAT if a valid VAT number is given to them. And since I own a "hobby firm" which *does' have a valid VAT number, I can get my order from Mensys VAT-free if I order in the name of my firm! Similarily, when I last week ordered a JetPort II PCI serial card from Germany, they also said that they don't have to charge VAT if I could give them a valid VAT number - so I gave them my firm's VAT number and voil ! the card will be 16% cheaper! :-) CJ>> ) Team OS/2 E-mail: cribo.jacobsson@gaea.se CS> A "Teamster"?
