In order to stop a device from using DMA, open Device Manager within W2K, right click on the IDE port the drive is connected to, select properties, select the advanced tab, and unselect DMA if it's there. Reboot and give it a try. In my experience with W2K, it tries to use DMA if it can on any device connected to the IDE ports.
