It was my old RTL8029-compatible NIC that I replaced with an SMC1211, which is Win2K-compatible. It left a "fingerprint" in the registry, it seems. And the Tape devices I'm not worried about - it doesn't make reliable backups anyway, I rarely use it, and I plan on getting rid of it in favor of my CD-RW. The USB is Win2K-compatible - that is, with a driver that I can download from the VIA web site. That just about covers all of the hardware issues that the Upgrade Tool reported. BTW, I'm not upgrading Win98 - I'm installing Win2K as a separate OS. My Win98 installation is still too valuable to me for the very reason that some programs will never be able to run under Win2K. I do plan on eventually upgrading my processor to an Athlon which also means upgrading the motherboard - maybe I'll have better luck when that's done.
