You're correct on the first one. But on the second one - it seems Microsoft has finally gotten smart: if it needs to get any files from CD, it probably looks here first to see if any files exist that were updated from a service pack install. That's only a guess on the second one. In NT, if you needed to insert your original CD to load any component of NT, you would be required (read: it is STRONGLY suggested) to re-apply the latest service pack to make sure all DLL's and such are at the same service pack level - avoids potential conflicts.
