Heck, Linux doesn't even work well enough for me, and I'm hardly non-technical. A lot of the problem is X11 (or rather the Linux implementations of it) -- not stable or easy enough to use. Video drivers are pretty darn bad unless you go with some old slow card. (But that's a problem as X11 assumes your native res is >1024x768.)
