There are more powerful ones, but someone constructing a batch procedure can always rely on trusty(crusty?) old EDLIN to be there ;-> Same thing goes for DEBUG - it can be driven with redirected input too. This isn't just idle blather either -- this aspect of these two little gadgets allowed me to automate procedures at Prudential that otherwise would have been impossible...apparently there was no way for the Configuration Managment staff to get authorization to buy any compilers -- because we weren't a "programming" group. So I got pretty damn creative using DEBUG and EDLIN. That builtin DEBUG assembler came in pretty handy at times. I developed a bit of a local reputation as a practitioner in black arts with some of the stuff I whipped up using these neanderthal tools.
