A socket is an API thing rather than a TCP/IP thing, I would have thought that ZoneAlarm would only be interested in TCP/IP things, and so wouldn't be reporting sockets that connect rather than accept. You could try an experiment with Telnet. To do FTP (which most browsers support) you have to accept an incoming connection to transfer data, directory listings or files, but the specific port is usually negotiated immediately before the transfer and so ZoneAlarm wouldn't be relevant until then.
