AFAIK WINS is just like DNS.  It stands for Windows Internal Naming System 
(probably?) and resolves computer's network id's in a domain or workgroup.

I *think* they've done away with WINS in Win2k and it's now purely just DNS. 
Correct me if I'm wrong.
