It's not control any more than telling people they have to lock the door when they close up shop for the night. I've had people try to get permission to install a modem so they don't have to go thru the proxy server to get to the net with no restrictions. I just explained it as asking if we could cut a hole in the wall so they don't have to use the front door when they walk from their car to their desk. No lock, no alarm, just a big hole in the wall with a tarp over it to keep the wind out. With installing software I compared it to asking if they could rip out the lights in their office and install the lights they use at home, or get rid of the phone and bring in a phone from home to hook into the phone system, or tear up the carpet, throw out the desk, and bring in a throw rug and a beanbag chair from home. When I did that I had one guy say it was more like bringing in a plant from home. I told him changing his background was like bringing in a plant, installing software was much more. People don't understand computers, unless you explain it in terms with visual images they have no idea how much of a difference it can make. The plant example made that quite clear to me.
