Another perspective on infinite backward compatibility:

I have useful cards that won't run on anything but a </= 8MHz ISA bus.

I have useful (low-level) programs that poke UARTs and Parallel ports directly, 
and run OK in 98, if you know how to tweak things.

ME is the (lame) end of the line for me.  I have bigger problems with hardware.
