Subj : Network bindings questions To : All From : Randall Parker Date : Mon Mar 26 2001 12:41 am From: Randall Parker I'm trying to make sense of the Control Panel|Network|Bindings page on NT4. When I choose "Show Bindings for all services" I get 4 entries: NetBIOS Interface Remote Access Server Service Server Workstation Server vs Workstation? What is that about? Are there then 4 services as listed above on this computer? What's their idea of what a service is? Opening the tree anone layer lower I see for each of the above top entries the following subentries: WINS Client(TCP/IP) NetBEUI Protocol I don't understand the logical layering here. Can each service use or not use WINS Client? When I go to the "all adapters" view then the 4 services entries only show up under "NetBEUI Protocol" and under "WINS Client(TCP/IP)". They don't show up under TCP/IP Protocol. So I'm confused, you can optionally route NetBEUI/NetBIOS packets over TCP/IP, right? I can't remember the difference between NetBIOS and NetBEUI. Anyone know? Also, under the "all adapters" view I get two separate identically named entries called "Remote Access WAN Wrapper". Why two of them? The first one just contains "Remote Access WAN Wrapper". Whereas the second one contains Remote Access WAN Wrapper TCP/IP Protocol WINS Client(TCP/IP) The most important question: In order to secure this computer more thoroughly for the adapter that is the NIC to the DSL Modem (ie to the wild wooly internet) should I disable all "NetBEUI Protocol" and "WINS Client(TCP/IP)" entries? What is WINS Client anyhow? --- BBBS/NT v4.00 MP * Origin: Barktopia Gating Project http://HarborWebs.com:8081 (1:379/45) .
