Subj : Passwords, sharing, and all that To : All From : Randall Parker Date : Thu Mar 22 2001 06:44 am From: Randall Parker I always manage to get file sharing to work on my home machines. But after helping someone else I realize I'm not clear on a few things: 1) In order to do a file share between two computers do they both need to have the same user name defined? 2) When doing a file share is it necessary to use the same user name that you are logged on as when connecting to the other machine to share? 3) Do both machines need to have the same password for the user name that is being used to log in to do the sharing? I was helping a guy over the phone (who is notoriously inaccurate in telling me what he's really doing and what he's done) to configure his new Win2k machine to map a drive from it to be accessible from his NT machine. Well, he was logged in as Administrator on both machines but he claimed he had different passwords for that user name. Yet the share with just the user name entered (again, I didn't personally witness this visually) worked across the machines. Also, when I had him create a another user name, same user name and same password on both machines. Then while he was still logged in as Administrator he tried mapping to the Win2k drive from the NT machine using this new user name. He was not able to do so. Is it not allowed to specify a different user name than the one you are logged in as when you do a mapping? Or is there something about the settings for the same user on two different machines that has to match in order to use that user to log in to do file sharing? --- BBBS/NT v4.00 MP * Origin: Barktopia Gating Project http://HarborWebs.com:8081 (1:379/45) .
