but what file(s) are you aware of that are built as a compendium at install 
time, as a result of hardware enumeration and detection, be they executables, 
libraries or resource files?

I'll try to jog my memory from this end as well.

Yes, the mskb item seemed to describe a simple case of 98SE, only, using raw 
DIR order in choosing one of two USER.EXEs.  The extract fix, however, did not 
work in at least two cases I know of.
