Subj : Re: build-custom-DLL-at-install-time? To : Frank Haber From : Rich Date : Wed Mar 14 2001 10:10 am From: "Rich" <@> These aren't custom built at install time. In fact, the very = principal behind SFC presumes that the protected files are unchanged = from the distribution media. There are two different files of the same = name in the installation CABs. One set is used when running setup in = some environments like from MS-DOS or a boot floppy. The others are = those that are installed as part of Windows. The KB article to which = you refer is describing a bug where the location of these three files = may point to the incorrect one and that if your installed version is = corrupted and SFC is requested to restore a copy from the CABs it may = grab the wrong one. This looks to be a bug in an index file in Windows = 98 only and not Windows 95 which didn't have the feature nor Windows 98 = SE or Windows Me which had a correct reference in the index. Rich "Frank Haber" wrote in message = news:3aafbb0a$1@w3.nls.net... Well, I can understand your calling me on that one, since I was = totally sloppy in all particulars. The diagnostic in question is SFC.EXE, not MSCONFIG. The custom-built files include at least two of these three: user.exe gdi.exe krnl386.exe One mskb item that references this is http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q192/8/32.ASP I have direct experience with two users who ran SFC, accepted its = advice, and were snookered into replacing user.exe and rendering their = machines unbootable. One just swapped out his HD with Sony (laptop). I don't = know what the other decided to to. Yes, SFC's another "support tool." It is, however, cited in many = magazine articles as a kind of "poor man's Norton." It's a useful tool to = recover from bad installs, if you have nothing better. It's a remarkably = bugfree, if cumbersome tool - except for that one-time heart-attack-maker cited above. Just say, "update the signature for user.exe and stop = bothering me," and you're home free for life. And I suspect the fault for the bug is shared with the OEMs in = question, who didn't fully vet their installs with an SFC run.
