 the cpu usage shooting up part is, afaik, normal
 
 i've encountered this before, and the only solution i've found so far is to
 re-install windows and office altogether. i think it has to do with a file
 getting corrupted or something...

 is it a legit copy? if it is, you could try contacting microsoft about that.
 didn't try that, as all of my stuff (besides the freeware apps) are illegit
