Also check the workgroup settings(Domain Master, Browse master, etc). The conflict/problem may lie in the Linux box causing browsing conflicts. Try setting the OS level to a lower number or higher number if you want it to win the elections and I would set encrypted password to on. The remote browse list setting may have an affect also. SWAT should do all this for you.
