It's not the "screams of conspiracy" as you call it that upsets some people about activation. It's because Microsoft assumes you are dishonest by making sure you don't "cheat" them and install the operating system or software on more than one machine. It's also because you have to call them or use the internet (whatever) and get their permission (that's what activation is) to use the software you paid for. Oh, I know - you didn't pay for the software, just the right to use the license. That's debatable.
