Subj : Win2k/NetModem To : CRAIG HEALY From : CHRIS CRANFORD Date : Fri Aug 23 2002 05:24 pm Craig, -> -> If all this is for Telnet/FTP sessions to your BBS, then it's -> -> important you think about these issues as well before attempting to -> -> setup such as monster. I will assure you that setting of WINS 5 -> -> will be easier, more stable, and less of a headache than attempting -> -> to work with Virtual Ports. -> I am in the same boat as Bennie. I run WC 4.20 as a Telnet app for -> several reasons. First, is that it was a heck of a lot easier to -> add the Telnet capability to WC4 than it was to get all my other -> well-honed utilities and games to run under WC5. The Front Door, -> mail tossers (FIDO/RIME/e-mail/Usenets), all the various WCPro stuff.. -> None would work under WC5. I'd either have to replace 'em, if I could, -> or do without. The amount of loss and expense was more than I could do. I understand your situation completely. The thing that bennie just does not understand is that Virtual Port software is not available in most cases for Windows 2000 and running Windows 2000 and Wildcat using Internet connectivity is primarly going to be WINS based at this point which is why I continued to urge he upgrade if he wants to move to Windows 2000 Professional. -> more difficult to work with and configure. Yes, some is experience, but -> it's been running since January and still I prefer WC4 as more suited to -> the kind of BBS activities I need. This too i understand. There is a lot more to configure because it's more "Windows" based than "DOS" based which a lot of people aren't too comfortable understanding. Plus with it being client-server technology instead of the old application technology, that makes it a little more difficult. -> It isn't that I don't appreciate what WC5 brings to the table, I do. -> The Internet connectivity is wonderful. It's what it can't do that -> troubles me. I wish there were some way I could use WC5 as an Internet -> shell to run WC4. Let WC5 handle the IO on the TCP/IP and dial-up -> side, and run WC4 underneath. That'd be the best of both worlds. -> Unfortunately, I believe it'd have to run on a Win98 machine to avoid -> many of the problems Bennie and I have had. I have a Win2000 machine -> and have gone down the same path as Bennie, with no luck. Yep, this is true. Believe me, it isn't something that Santronics can fix for anyone, it's the manufacturers of these virtual port applications that aren't supported on Windows 2000 at this point. -> Bottom line, I wish it would work, but it's not really suited to do -> what WC4/DOS is doing. You certainly can run Wc4 under the scenes of WC5 if you wanted. This will require something like Netmodem or COM/IP on WinNT/9x machines to do this though.
