This is definately the truth! -> The USER interface in XP is a helluva lot better, the taskbar and systray -> are far more organized, the start menu is to. Maybe I'm just an old-fashioned kid, but I beg to differ. Yes, they may appear to be more "organized"; however I think the colors, fonts, etc aren't the best in the world. I looked at the HOME edition and have not reviewed the office edition to see if it's any different. Do you know? -> There are alot more "wizards" in XP to allow you to configure a number of -> things, XP also comes with System Restore, which is a feature they introduced -> in Windows ME, but System Restore is much like Roxio's GOBACK utility, whereas Now this feature is something that I haven't explored yet. This is a nice utility for people who make ongoing continuous changes to their machines. I can see this being more for home users than for biz users. -> If you have 3 PC's and one copy of Win2k, you can use that one copy of Win2k -> to install it on those 3 PC's, technically not legal but nothing to stop you. -> If you have 3 PC's and one copy of XP, you can only install that one copy -> on one PC, because of the Windows Product Activation. Exactly! This is a nice feature that I think Microsoft has introduced in order to protect their monopoly from people using illegal licensed software. But, how many people are going to "really" like this feature? I think it's a great protection scheme to their software in IMO. -> If I have to reboot the XP box for any reason, the drives it shares with 2K -> box stay mounted or remount ok on 2K box, but the drives the 2K box shares -> with it, show up, but dont automatically "re-connect", I have to goto my computer -> and click on the icons to force the reconnect.. Its annoying.. But if your in a batch file and change to that directory, it will automatically reshare itself again. Even though the icons don't change to reflect the share in the explorer window, they are actually active just as soon as the resource share is required. -> XP has a built in firewall, its effective on keeping the outside out, but -> if you get a trojan, its useless. How configurable is this firewall? NAT? Can the firewall be used in handling IP Routing from an inbound NIC to an outbound internal NIC card to produce an OS WXP based router (like LRP)? -> Of my setup, the only thing I noticed that was broke when I went from W2K -> to XP pro, was ALLFIX Universal, there is something in the runtime libraries -> used by Allfix Universal that doesnt like XP, ALLFIX DOS works w/o issue. There were a number of runtime changes and modifications made with XP. Some of the Extended APIs changed from what we've gathered thus far. If an application uses these extended APIs, they'll fail with runtime errors. Secondly, the way the XP(.NET) platform are combined, the same runtime library is now responsible for running ALL Visual Studio compiled applications regardless of language (VC++, VB, etc). -> I have heard reports that Synchronet and BBBS/NT may not work under XP? I haven't checked out BBBS/NT at the moment. We have played around with copies of Wildcat! on an XP platform in a test environment and those work great!
