Depends on what you want, need, use or do. The USER interface in XP is a helluva lot better, the taskbar and systray are far more organized, the start menu is to. There are alot more "wizards" in XP to allow you to configure a number of things, XP also comes with System Restore, which is a feature they introduced in Windows ME, but System Restore is much like Roxio's GOBACK utility, whereas if something stops working or gets corrupted you can roll back to an earlier point in time.. I have used that feature once and was pleased. The key to system restore is to create a manual restore point before you plan on doing any changes, system restore does create restore points daily, but when I used it, I had to use a restore point that was from that morning, therefore minor config changes I made to my email client were undone, which was no big deal. The version of Windows Media Player that comes with XP is nice.. -But- If you have 3 PC's and one copy of Win2k, you can use that one copy of Win2k to install it on those 3 PC's, technically not legal but nothing to stop you. If you have 3 PC's and one copy of XP, you can only install that one copy on one PC, because of the Windows Product Activation. Rather than me tell you more about WPA, do a search on the WEB for Windows Product Activation, you can hear the pro's and cons, I suggest you give all spins a fair hearing. -My Setup- I have XP Pro on this machine and I have Windows 2000 Pro SP2 on another, both networked together. I have both machines mounting shares as local drives... Ergo on Windows 2000 Box: Its Drive D is Drive L on XP Box Its Drive E Is Drive M on XP box On XP Pro Box: Its Drive D Is Drive J on 2K box Its DRive G Is Drive K on 2k Box If I have to reboot the 2k box for any reason, its shares going both ways remount automatically. If I have to reboot the XP box for any reason, the drives it shares with 2K box stay mounted or remount ok on 2K box, but the drives the 2K box shares with it, show up, but dont automatically "re-connect", I have to goto my computer and click on the icons to force the reconnect.. Its annoying.. XP has a built in firewall, its effective on keeping the outside out, but if you get a trojan, its useless. Overall I am not displeased, the user interface is by far the biggest improvement, but if W2k is handling everything ok for you, you wont shortchange yourself. Also take note that if you do migrate to XP, from W2k you _cannot_ migrate to the _home edition_ of XP, it has to be XP pro. Furthermore upgrading to XP from Win2k cannot be undone by simply going to the add/remove programs function like one could if they upgraded from 98/98se/me. If you are unsure, get Drive Image or Norton Ghost and make images of your 2k setup first! Of my setup, the only thing I noticed that was broke when I went from W2K to XP pro, was ALLFIX Universal, there is something in the runtime libraries used by Allfix Universal that doesnt like XP, ALLFIX DOS works w/o issue. I have heard reports that Synchronet and BBBS/NT may not work under XP? == Ross http://www.easternstar.info recassell@charter.net, ross@the-estar.com, ross@easternstar.info ICQ = 5305939 ....
