HEADING MS OFF AT THE PASSPORT
Sun Microsystems CEO Scott McNealy has revealed that his company
is quietly developing a competing standard for authentication to
Microsoft's Passport service. McNealy said Passport is an attempt
by Microsoft to gain an upper hand over other online businesses
by leveraging the millions of users it would amass through MSN,
Hotmail, .Net, and Microsoft's Instant Messaging. McNealy said
that Sun's new initiative would join many companies together
with an open standard. The rivalry between Microsoft and Sun
intensified with the recent dropping of support for Sun's Java
language from Microsoft's new XP operating system, forcing users
to either download software from Sun or to purchase it
pre-installed by the computer manufacturer.
