I ran XP beta 2 (briefly)-- I'm not currently running XP, though I'm expecting to receive the new version soon. My understanding is that the Compatability Mode is only compatible w. Win95/98-- not either DOS or Win 3.1. As a result, I wouldn't expect it to make too many programs workable (all the WIn9x software I care to use runs under Win 2000 anyway).
