Unless you were trying to do some 3D work with an older version of DirectX that doesn't support 3D, it should have no impact on color depth. Color depth and resolution is controlled by your video card and its supported drivers. You didn't mention which card you own and whether or not you have the latest drivers for it. Some cards (most notably ATI) are very sensitive to which drivers are being used. In any event, since your problem seems to be resolved, have fun.
