If you have Windows XP, Activation, aka windows product activation (WPA), is 
exactly that, activating your copy of Windows XP.

Upon a new install/upgrade or if enough hardware was replaced in an existing 
installation you must obtain a activation code that is based on your 
installation key and a checksum derived from your hardware configuration.

This is to discourage piracy, a new install/upgrade gives you a 30 day period 
to activate, failure to do so will prevent Windows from booting up, except into 
the activation wizard.
