I think that Irex does different things than Watergate. They are rather complementary pieces of software. Irex doesn't toss any mail and Watergate doesn't talk SMTP/POP3. The only thing in common is that they can both perform gateway functions, but of course you can configure either one as your gateway and switch off the other. If you don't use Watergate you will need something else to toss. If you don't use Irex, you need something else as a TCP/IP frontend. Watergate and Irex can work together very nicely using either te KA9Q spool or the UUCP spool. Either method works well but the KA9Q method is probably the best choice because the workfiles and datafiles are easier to understand and to construct/debug with a simple text editor (notepad). The only known Watergate bug at this moment is that Watergate doesn't pack (run external archivers) very well under NT4. Only seems to happen if you have multiple uplinks/downlinks. With only one uplink it seems to work OK. There don't seem to be any problem at all under Windows 95/98. But for NT4 there might be a workaround for that some time when someone figures out why there is a problem.
