Subj : very basic question - need help

I'm pretty new to programming.  I want to know how you build a free
standing program with an interface that can run by itself - like an
..exe file or something of that nature.  I took a year course in java
but i still don't know how to do that kind of stuff.  what kind of
programming do i need to learn to be able to do this?
