There is a problem with your solution.

There is no /proc/<pid>/tasks

I know for sure my process has quite a few threads.

When I look at /proc/16754 I do not see any "tasks"
subdir at all.

running kernel 2.4.6 (redhat, the same under suse)

Maybe this is 2.6 kernel feature?
