Thanks for your reply, altho I was a bit confused when you suggested
using pthread_kill as I found a post "Problem with pthread_kill" which
you posted in that seemed to indicate that wasn't a good way to go.
Anyway sorry for the obvious question I originally posted a question on
a different forum as to how to determine if a thread had exited without
calling join on it and the answer I received was to catch sigchld.
Still should have known better.
