We did that right from the beginning on Tru64 UNIX and on VMS. It just seemed "obvious" on systems where dynamic shared libraries were normal and natural. There was very nearly an IA64 ABI for UNIX 98 that would have disallowed this, because just about everyone involved agreed that it was a terrible idea.
