ok, to follow up on myself, once more, the solution (workaround??) is
to add -D_POSIX_SOURCE to CFLAGS. You'd think this would happen
automatically if, as the document mentioned above says, all you need is
-pthread.

Oh well, at least I'm on the road now. Thanks for your patience!
