Yes, even while not holding mutex.  I even tried a sleep there -- same
result! But note I can only reproduce this with NPTL 0.29.  I realise
this is somewhat old, but it's still what you get on a Redhat 9 system
that is freshly "up2date-ed".  Looks like it's LD_ASSUME_KERNEL on that
one, then! :-)
