If everything freezes so badly, the most likely problems are bad hardware (as I said), or inter-process communication problems, for example no "/tmp" directory, loopback network interface down or something similar. I imagine a corrupted filesystem could also have this effect. If you use NFS, a malfunctioning NFS server can freeze up your station. The file mounting problems you mentioned should be the starting point for your search. If the graphical system doesn't allow you to check what's wrong, switch to a text-mode console - press Ctrl-Alt-F1 (or F2..F6) and run the commands from there. To switch back to X-windows, press Ctrl-Alt-F7. It surprises me that you know how to configure NAT and DNS, but you don't know how to run a proper diagnostic. Mihai .
