Trent, you are a genius. I tried the 2.6 Kernel (on same CD) and for 
some reason it... WORKS PERFECTLY!

I am happy now. :-)

BTW, I did try before posting here Knoppix 3.6 and fiddling with the 
BIOS settings as you suggested, but those didn't help.
